Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter. She is a former world record holder in the women's 49kg category. She is a two-time Commonwealth Games champion and a gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. 

Chanu also won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games. Mirabai Chanu made India proud again after winning Gold Medal in Weightlifting at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. 

The 27-year-old Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg to win the Gold Medal which was also India's third medal after at the ongoing CWG 2022 after Sanket Sargar won the Silver and Gururaja delivered Bronze Medal.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on August 15, 1994, in a small village called Nongpok Sekmai in Imphal West district, Manipur, India. The family identified her strength when she could lift the logs of wood her brother found difficult to pick and walk easily back home.

Her father, Saikhom Gopal Singh, was a farmer, and her mother, Saikhom (O) Ibemhal Devi, was a homemaker. Chanu has two younger sisters, Kh. Sonia Chanu and Kh. Reema Chanu.

Chanu started her early education at Sekmai High School and later attended Khuman Lampak Sports Academy in Imphal. It was at Khuman Lampak that Chanu first started weightlifting under the guidance of coach N. Ibotombi Singh.

Chanu made her first international appearance at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, finishing sixth in the 48 kg category.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu: Achievements

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, an Indian weightlifter, created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the 48 kg category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

With this win, Chanu also broke the Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk lift and bettered her own national record in the process.

The 24-year-old from Manipur had won a silver medal in the same event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Chanu also won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim, USA.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu: Failures

Chanu's career has not been without its share of failures She missed out on qualifying for the 2016 Olympics and then had to pull out of the 2017 World Championships due to an injury. 

She also failed to lift the required weight at the 2018 Asian Games, meaning she missed out on a medal.

Despite these setbacks, Chanu has bounced back to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is a true inspiration, and proof that even the biggest failures can be overcome. 

After failing to lift 82kg in her first attempt, she managed to somehow hold on to the weight in her second chance. 

The 21-year-old lifter could not even match the performance she had given during the selection trials at Patiala in June.
